Spontaneity + Collaboration

What is Improv?

Improv is a dynamic form of acting characterized by spontaneity and collaboration, devoid of scripts or pre-planned actions. In this art form, two or more performers receive random suggestions, often from the audience, which serve as the foundation for the scene they will create together. By actively listening to each other and reacting in the moment, performers craft a one-of-a-kind narrative that may encompass comedy, tragedy, or confusion, making each performance a unique and unforgettable experience. The only constants in improv are the rules governing each individual game.

At Carolina Improv Company, we emphasize the principle of "Yes, And." This technique involves leveraging your listening skills to propel the scene forward by affirming your stage partners' contributions (Yes) and building upon them (And). Through this collaborative exchange, scenes evolve organically, fostering trust in both your fellow performers and your own instincts.

Our classes at Carolina Improv Company are designed to enhance your listening abilities, recognizing that improvisation is a skill we employ daily in various aspects of our lives. Whether at home or in the workplace, improv serves as a valuable life skill, offering a unique outlet for stress relief as you immerse yourself in different roles and scenarios, transcending boundaries to explore new worlds, albeit temporarily, both mentally and on stage.
